Wayne Rooney has finally broken his silence and has spoken regarding the drink-driving scandal earlier this year that saw him hit the headlines.
The former England captain was arrested back in September and has now spoken out on the events, calling it a “stupid mistake”.
The footballer was pulled over by police at 2am one Friday in Cheshire, while driving a black VW Beetle.
The car in which he was caught, however, was not his and instead belonged to Laura Simpson, the young woman caught up in the scandal that Wayne had met earlier on that evening at the Bubble Room in Alderly Edge.
The controversial scene was only made more so by the fact that Wayne’s pregnant wife, Coleen, was away on holiday at the time.
The former Manchester United ace has since been sentenced to community service and has been banned from driving for two years.
But now, four months after the events took place, the current Everton star has finally broken his silence and admitted that his actions let his family down.
In an exclusive interview with talkSPORT to be aired this weekend, Wayne admits: “Sometimes you make mistakes. I held my hands up. I made a mistake.
“I knew straight away I had made a stupid mistake and I have to move on.
“It is not nice. I’ve got children and it is not nice for them to see that and I try to move on and learn from it which I feel I am doing.”
In the interview, Wayne adds that he is in fact enjoying his community service at a community garden centre, at which he works alongside adults with learning difficulties.
Laura Simpson, the young woman caught up in the scandal, was quick to get her side of the story out into the public sphere, not too long in fact after the scandal broke.
Since the events, she has made a name for herself in the limelight and has found fame for herself following her role in the controversial evening.
She also said that she believed they would have slept together if police had not stopped the car.
“We had a kiss, a hug and some banter, harmless fun. I’m not a marriage wrecker,” she said at the time.
This, however, was denied by Wayne Rooney’s people.
But while it’s been a difficult year for Coleen, it seems as though she and her family has something to look forward to in the coming year, as the pregnant mum of three and her family are moving into a new £20 million mansion with the former Manchester United captain in the countryside.
According to reports, the couple have undertaken the construction of their six bedroom home from the ground up.
As this photo of the 40 acre plot reveals, the ground floor has already been built.
The family expect to move into their new home next year – which is situated just down the road from the house in which they currently live.
And it looks like the family are planning to partake in a number of countryside pursuits, as they have created two man-made fishing lakes on the land.
As of now, the two huge fishing lakes have been dug and filled, also with room for 15 horses in the stables and a paddock for them to graze on.
The construction on the main house and the outhouses is also well under way with cranes working and numerous builders.
The house will also include a tunnel out to the garage for Wayne’s cars – which means that he need never get wet again on the way to the cars!
As well as a spa and a pool, there’s also a home cinema and an orangery in the garden.
It seems as though the Rooney family are trying to put the incidents of this year behind them, as Coleen has said that she is prepared to forgive her childhood sweetheart.
In a lengthy and emotional Facebook post last month, Coleen said: “I know I would be fine on my own, with just me and my children, but I don’t want to live like that, I want to try and continue our marriage and live as a family, because that’s what I want to do.”
“I’m not saying everything is fine and forgotten about, but we are as good as can be at this point, I’m not the type of person to put a show on and say we’re all loved-up…. I’m just real.”
But the Rooney’s may have a few more hurdles to climb over in the near future, as the woman caught up in the incident, Laura Simpson, has demanded £75,000 to enter the Celebrity Big Brother house so that she can dish the dirt on what happened that night.
Coleen, despite being prepared to forgive her husband and move into a new home with her family, may face yet more upset as Big Brother bosses have said that they will offer Simpson £55,000 to entre the house. The mother of one, however, is demanding £75,000 to dish the dirt when the show returns on January 2nd.
An insider spoke to The Sun and said: “Laura has been in talks for a while with producers, but she’s holding out for bigger money.
“She’s been offered £55k, but she’s demanding £75k. Laura has a really good job and a lot of work throughout January, so to sacrifice all of that £55k wouldn’t be beneficial to her.
“She’s offered the producers a detailed step by step run through of everything that happened between her and Rooney in the house. It’s definitely going to be something that is brought up in conversation.
“The only thing she’s reluctant to talk about in depth is her phone conversation with Coleen, however, Laura likes to party so after a few drinks who knows what she might reveal.”
Simpson, who earns £38,000 a year and lives in a modest terrace house has described herself online as a regional sales and letting manager.
Describing the night that she met the football ace, she said: “I got to the bar around 10pm. He introduced himself with his mate and we sat down and had a talk and had a laugh.
“He kept admiring my boobs in my clingy top and asking what size they were.
“He asked if they were real and said, ‘I’d like to get my hands on them’. I laughed, he was being flirty and I didn’t tell him my boobs are fake.
“It’s not every night you meet a famous footballer and it wasn’t that I was star-struck, I just liked talking to him.
“Yes he’s a bit of a lad, and I was drunk but I was doing nothing wrong. I’m not a marriage wrecker.”
The Sun on Sunday also reported that Wayne’s wife Coleen confronted Laura on the phone after learning of her husband’s arrest.
Simpson continued: “She asked me to tell her what happened.
“She seemed unhappy with the fact that we had left a nightclub in a cab together to go to my car.
“She did say both of us were at fault for getting in the taxi and that we shouldn’t have done that.”
